My favourite day of the whole year, Halloween, is almost upon us and I am PSYCHED! I’ve got my outfit sorted but I need a scary snack so I am going to show you how to make these little guys. They are simple and delicious and will have your tastebuds quivering!


For the putrified flesh of the cupcake –
125g self-raising flour
125g caster sugar
¼ tsp bicarbonate of soda
130g soft unsalted butter
2 large eggs zest of 2 limes
1 tbsp lime juice
½ tbsp milk

For the ectoplasmic lime slime
110g caster sugar
zest of 1 lime
110ml lime juice
2 large eggs
5 egg yolks

You will also need –

Your choice of buttercream (a small amount), coloured black
A fist-sized amount of white sugar paste
A small amour of yellow sugar paste
A tiny amount of black sugar paste

    Mmkay, I have a question about zest…once the cake is done, (whether you've added lime or lemon zest) do you get little chunks of the skin in your cake? Or does the stuff dissolve when cooked? Just curious, because so many recipes call for zest, and I can't think of anything more disgusting than little slices of lemon/lime skin in a cake to choke on.
    (I've had raw zest on stuff before, like as a topping for cheesecake and I just can't stand the texture.)
    (Also, I know this question isn't really specific to the video, and for that I'm sorry. These cupcakes do look lovely! Very creative concept.)

    I made some like this a few years ago (only not nearly as fancy with all that delicious slime), but just used a flat tip to pipe white buttercream bandages. They looked equally good, I'd say, but much less work!
    A good option for those of who are a bit less ambitious than Jemma!
